Discovery

Art can be perceived and interpreted in millions of ways, but the most important viewpoints come from that of the artist, the one behind the paint brush (or whatever their choice of medium may be). An artist has a purpose, and our job as viewers and admirers is to uncover that purpose, to discover what is being portrayed and why. History, circumstance, and society all play a role in an artist's message. Just like a song writer, an artist is able to tell a story, to evoke an emotion, to engage an audience. The only difference is in the way that message is transcribed. Art is just a different form of communication. So as we take a look at a few modern artists and their pieces, we will be uncovering the why behind the work rather than the what. Why has the artist chosen to capture this image? What were they trying to communicate?
